The transformer industry should avoid overcapacity.
According to a report by Beijixing Transformer Network, transformers primarily serve functions such as voltage transformation, current transformation, impedance transformation, isolation, and voltage regulation. The transformer industry has grown and matured in tandem with power infrastructure development, which is a critically important component of China’s overall infrastructure construction. In particular, over the past few years, increased government investment in power infrastructure has revitalized the transformer market, leading to a rapid expansion of production capacity among Chinese transformer manufacturers. However, in recent years, along with the industry’s rapid growth, certain inherent shortcomings have gradually come to light.
Currently, China’s transformer market demand is less than 1.5 billion kVA, while the industry’s installed capacity has already reached 3 billion kVA, resulting in severe overcapacity that directly undermines corporate profitability. Moreover, cutthroat competition has allowed substandard products to enter the market, leading to widespread poor quality and more than half of all transformers failing to meet regulatory standards. As critical equipment for safeguarding the power grid, the quality of transformers has a direct and profound impact on the security of China’s power system.
According to analysts at Shangpu Consulting in the electronics industry, Chinese transformer manufacturers have long operated in a low-profit environment, burdened by heavy operational costs and lacking government funding. As a result, R&D efforts have been confined to addressing short-term technical challenges, leaving little capacity to pursue the foundational and core technologies necessary for long-term corporate development. For many years, the growth of most state-owned enterprises has relied heavily on technology imports, while insufficient emphasis has been placed on independent innovation. Companies should avoid both over-reliance on imports at the expense of indigenous R&D and isolated, insular research; instead, they should prioritize open, collaborative innovation and actively promote the assimilation and adaptation of imported technologies.
According to the “2011 China Transformer Market Analysis and Investment Value Research Report” released by Shangpu Consulting, domestic transformer manufacturers must move away from their traditional reliance on price competitiveness. With strong government support for wind power development and smart grid construction, these companies need to intensify R&D efforts to produce higher-tech, higher-quality products. At the same time, they should remain market-oriented, make appropriate structural adjustments, and avoid the adverse impacts of overcapacity on their operations.
